Who can forget the dark, fashion-forward 80’s cult classic, Heathers staring Winona Ryder, Shannen Doherty, and Christian Slater? Reports surfaced recently that the dark comedy is making its’ way to a musical on Broadway with plans to have a full-scale regional production ready for 2010, followed ideally by a Broadway run.
Nicolette Prpa, owner of SHE Boutique, explains, “Heathers fashion was all about big hair and boyfriend blazers, plaids and pleated skirts, headbands and shoulder pads, and button-downs and brooches. Think Gossip Girl, but less fitted.”
TREND 1: The Boyfriend Jacket
Prpa explains, “These oversized coats are a popular trend right now and will continue being popular come fall. I love What Comes Around Goes Around Evelyn Top ($105) since it’s a versatile piece. Not only does it double as a lightweight jacket and shirt, but the adjustable tie at the waist allows you to play with different silhouettes.
TIP: “For some added 80’s flair, I recommend removable shoulder pads.”Get ready for "Heathers: The Musical." I suggest the Jill Stern Stay Put Washable Foam Shoulder Pads ($13).
TREND 2: Full Skirts
“In Heathers, pleated skirts were all the rage but for a more modern take, opt instead for volume. My favorite skirt right now? This metallic full skirt by Loeffler Randall ($200) and will work really well from day to evening. Gold is very much a modern neutral and pairs well with many colors.”
TREND 3: Color
The use of color for the wardrobes in the movie was very interesting. Each character had a signature color -
Veronia Sawyer (Winona Ryder) - blue
Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) – green
Heather Chandler – red
Heather McNamara – yellow
We're digging the Matt & Nat ITO Clutch in Red ($185) and Jack Rabbit La Battu Snake Embossed Clutch in Green Envy ($400) at SHE Boutique.
